Just off of State Circle in historic Annapolis, Maryland, lies a lovely little gem of a yarn shop, Yarn Basket. They’ve been residents of Maryland Avenue for a few years, recently moving up the street to #53 which they (picturesquely) share with an antiquarian book store. <sigh>.

Miss Laura and I wandered in just after opening, finding a long, narrow room filled with a beautifully curated selection of yarns, carefully arranged by color. It’s an unusual arrangement, but boy! It is certainly inspiring. Arranging the yarns this way really encourages a textural, tone-on-tone way of thinking about knitted fabric. I was encouraged to combine yarns of different weights and textures, hold them in my hand and imagine what could become of the rich reds, ambers and deep, glade greens. Swinging around, I could dream about fuzzy lace weights lying cozily next to dk’s in cool aqua and icy pale blue. Sensorily, it was a treat. Yarn-wise, even more so!
From the incredibly luxurious Shalimar and Baah Yarns in merino, cashmere and silk,to the color fantasy of Zauberball and the divine alpacas of Galler to trusted favorites like Queensland, Juniper Moon and good ‘ol Berroco. All are snuggled together in an amazing egalitarian manner based on their color. Very nice indeed!
I took away a stunning skein of Galler fingering weight alpaca, finding it to be the best bargain in the shop at just over $40 USD and 660 yds. I’m pretty happy about that! Galler alpaca comes in several rich yet subtle shades.
It’s a lovely little shop in a lovely little street and should be on your “must-go” list. A visit to Yarn Basket can be combined with a stroll through the narrow brick streets of State Circle to enjoy the antique center of one of America’s oldest states. Two thumbs up!
