Everyone seems to have sock-fever these days. I suppose it’s inspired by the first few crisp/damp days of autumn. Elizabeth has a shiny new sock pattern out called “Snakes and Ladders” and I’m test-driving a still-secret pattern from another (mystery) designer. I guess it’s that time of year.
I happen to love hand-knitted socks…there’s nothing warmer and certainly nothing prettier. Somehow, I feel like knitters take extra pride in socks, perhaps because they’re small and shapely and often packed with precious details. (It’s a perfect time to order Kate Atherley’s new book “Custom Socks: Knit to Fit Your Feet”.)
Once you’ve knit your perfect socks, though, how will you wear them? While catching up on my blog reading yesterday, I came upon an interesting question…What shoes to wear with hand-knitted socks? Well!
Karin Templar of Fringe Association favors Keen footwear, so I started my virtual shopping spree there. This is great, high-tech, functional footwear made (sort of) handsome. (I find them a little “I’m going to climb something-ish”).
Above is my hands-down favorite from Keen, the Saratoga. Also rans are the Sarasota and the Rose. They offer some really gorgeous colors!
Next, I scooted over to Madewell. Ah, Madewell. I’ve always loved their shoes and boots, even though they’re always a little outside my price range. They are chic and beautifully crafted if not particularly suited to life in Prince Edward County. But, ooooh, I could see myself gliding about in a pair of those backless loafers wearing handmade socks with patterned heels…
When I was a bartender back in New Orleans, my friend Rebecca, an elementary school teacher, turned me on to the joys of Dansko. I’ve never looked back and have been wearing these Danish clogs in one form or another ever since. My favorite is the Merrie which sadly, has been discontinued. I’m nursing my last pair. Here’s my favorite of the new stuff…Paola!
LOVE these orange sneakers! And they come in other fabulous colors.
Here’s a shoemaker that has gained popularity lately. I think it’s because they’ve really pushed the envelope and updated the look. I’ve never owned a pair of Birkenstocks, choosing Mephisto last time, but those who like ’em, really like ’em. And look how pretty!
And last but not least, the perennial favorite Blundstone 500. If I can only have one pair, this is it!

We are on the same brainwave. I have been pondering which shoes will best pair with my new knitted socks. Very important business indeed.

I always have sock fever 🙂 They’re just so darned easy to knit! I usually wear them with trainers, but I do own a pair of Mary Jane shoes I got from a charity shop for more formal occasions

I know, crazy right? I do love them though!
