FPF #31 Colony Cowl

The Colony Cowl

Wow, things are very curious here. It’s been ridiculously cold. It has frozen again and our pipes, along with thousands of others, have burst. My kingdom for a plumber. My kingdom to BE a plumber! On top of that, New Orleans water pressure got so low (with everyone running their taps to keep them from freezing) that we are now under a boil water order, our second in 12 weeks. So. Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink. I went out to get water yesterday, but though I went to two stores, was only able to get a case of small bottles. The shelves are pretty bare because the roads iced and the trucks have been unable to get across the lake. Luckily, we have another case stashed from hurricane season. We soldier on!

Good thing there’s plenty of knitting! Miss Laura had a snow day on Wednesday because most of the French Quarter restaurants-including Coops-were closed due to broken pipes (and boil water orders are NO FUN in restaurants) so lots of knitting is taking place. We were compelled to cancel Tipsy Knitters this week, too, because of icy roads. I have a “basket full of blue” here, as you can see. Can’t tell you what it is but it is my new favorite yarn, Jaggerspun Green Line Organic Wool…utterly dreamy.

Today, though, we’re here to talk about cowls in their many incarnations…

I THINK THESE NEXT FEW COLD WEATHER WEEKS MIGHT BE A REALLY GOOD TIME TO THINK SERIOUSLY ABOUT KNITTING A SNUGGLY COWL. SO ON FRIDAYS BETWEEN NOW AND GROUNDHOG DAY, I’M GOING TO OFFER A WEEKLY DISCOUNT ON A DIFFERENT COWL PATTERN FROM MY RAVELRY STORE.

Colony Cowl

Some of you may have seen the Colony Cowl when it made its debut in October of last year. It’s an interesting (and very easy!) pattern stitch that creates a lovely open fabric that is surprisingly warm. Though it works up super quick in worsted weight yarn, it would be snuggly soft knitted in a yarn with a halo, like an angora or mohair blend. One could even work up the Colony Cowl with one strand of fingering weight yarn and one strand of mohair/silk such as Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze or Silk Cloud from Shibui. Those little holes would give a bold halo a nice place to live! “All the warmth without the weight” describes Colony perfectly. It is long enough to loop once loosely around the neck or twice looped for those unexpected colder days. The Colony Cowl is 50% off for one whole week…coupon code below.
