Hello knitters! Here I am enjoying a stretch of perfect weather here in the Deep South. I’ve been walking, knitting and gardening as well as reading and diving into my 1-month free subscription to The Great Courses (which has turned into a monthly subscription because it is AWESOME!)
I’ve always loved walking and, now that I have a little extra time, my rambles have become longer and more varied. I’m beginning to see things I’ve rarely taken the time to see before.
Saints
New Orleans is big on Saints (hence the name of our NFL team). It’s a very Catholic culture here and our neighborhoods are dotted with churches and ring with the sound of the bells a couple of times a day. There are also many grottos and altars and little Saints placed here and there. I’ve been photographing them whenever I see one. I found so many Saints in Aix-en-Provence back in the fall! I should make a little album of them 🙂
Swatches
Spring is always a big time for design submissions and this year is no exception. It will be interesting to see how things roll out over the next few months. I’m wondering how collections will be photographed? I currently have two projects that are in stages of tech editing and photography in New York where work-from-home mandates have been in place since March.
Nevertheless, I’ve been swatching like crazy. It’s a kind of messy process for me, with various yarns everywhere and sketchbooks and stitch dictionaries on every surface. It does eventually lead to a feeling peace and order once each design coalesces neatly and can be filed. I’ve been focusing on cables and texture this time around.
Succulents
Though I’ve never been much of a gardener, over the last couple of years, I’ve taken some real joy from my little succulent garden. I’ve enjoyed collecting different species, researching them and watching them grow. Recently, I’ve delved into leaf propagation which has been very rewarding.
Nearby, we have a lovely garden center, Perino’s, which has been open under very strict social distancing practices. Last week, I picked up a couple new species, including a fairly mature graptopetalum (ghost plant) that is ready to bloom. I have a couple that are ready for re-potting, so another excursion will be necessary so that I can acquire some pretty new pots.
Add a multiplicity of socks to this story (more on that later in the week) and you’ve got the sum total of my world this week. I hope yours has been fun!
