MAIZIE is a sweet, simple lightweight sweater designed to be knit in easy wearing linen. Linen yarn is crisp and cool in the hand and creates garments that are dry and comfortable to wear while providing excellent drape. The boho paisley-inspired lace motif is a pleasure to knit in linen. Its stiffness imparts a very rustic and natural quality to the openwork stitches yet creates superb drape through the fields of flat stockinette. During my summer sojourns, Sacket’s Harbor is the first signpost once I’ve left the interstate. It’s a quiet gem, the first leg of the Seaway Trail, and offers gorgeous, cool Lake Ontario vistas. It has a slightly retro vibe with roadside bars and cafes closed years ago by the building of I-81. I love it, and I often fantasize about how it must look in the off-season, foggy and damp with big fat snowflakes falling on icy waters. That’s my inspiration for the Sackets Harbor Hat and the matching Sackets Harbor Mittens.⁠

Lucca is inspired by the cerebral, reasoned aspects of Florence that make the city sublime. Lucca’s form is subtle and authentic, yet panels of directional texture are measured and mathematical. The result is an airy, rather delicate fabric, clean, quiet and cultivated. ⁠

Classic herringbone is suggested in this rhythmic twisted stitch pattern; it is graceful in appearance and absolutely addictive to knit. Lucca is the simplest of shapes, a classic square, and uses drop shoulder shaping so as not to disrupt the flow of pattern. Deep 1 by 1 ribbing accents all edges. Oh! And Lucca’s length is easy to customize, too!⁠

I knitted this sample in the springtime and it was my constant companion. I took it EVERYWHERE with me. I knit most of it at JazzFest. A couple of weeks later, I took it to the beach! When I blocked it, I actually found white sand in the water! It was so much fun and so intuitive, I felt I knit half of it in my sleep.⁠

This strong central motif plays off against a completely clean backdrop of flat stitches where seamless yoke shaping is worked silently in.⁠
I’m very fond of the simple, stealthy look of shaping stitches and the motifs created by their almost accidental movement. I especially enjoy the pattern inherent in seamless yoke shaping. It’s amazing how the rhythm of shaping patterns can be manipulated simply by adjusting the type and position of increase/decrease stitches.⁠
As cables go, this deceptively simple large scale twist is a doozy. It was developed by Norah Gaughan in her book “Knitted Cable Sourcebook”. Though it appears to be a single, giant cable, it actually involves a combination of smaller crosses. I found it really exciting to knit and particularly like the very high relief with which the cabled stitches stand proud of the reverse stockinette backdrop.⁠
