Drawing on the cultural influences of Native American, Mexican and Central American peoples, Astral Road represents the ingenuity, versatility and horse sense of early American settlers. Throw in a generous measure of the cultural heritage of Scandinavia and the British Isles and sow the seeds of a modern fashion acumen. Astral Road is the culmination of all these things. ⁠

The simple form of a traditional ruana becomes a canvas for a series of textures and cables. Favoring classic cables and open fields of easy texture, this project maintains a rustic, homespun character within its simple form. Blanket, sweater, coat or wrap, Astral Road nimbly transforms to suit the needs of the wanderer.⁠

Astral Road is worked from the top down beginning with a saddle-style cable panel that is cast on provisionally at the back neck and runs from neck to cuff on either side. The ruana is then worked seamlessly from the cable panel downwards in back and in front.⁠

Ghostly mist is a near constant state-of-being in the wetlands. It creeps into the marshy landscape morning and evening creating a deep quiet. This fog is thick and enveloping, yet light as air.⁠

That’s an apt description for the Marais Hat and matching cowl. Worked in weightless “Billow” by Shibui, it is soft and cozy yet airy and as nebulous as fog. Marais is pierced with eyelets and punctuated with bobbles in an array inspired by oystergrass, a common Y-shaped grass that grows along the damp edges of the bayou.⁠

The Marais Hat is a classic beret, drawing on the French history and culture of South Louisiana. Softly sculptured, this beret is whisper soft and echoes the oystergrass motif of its matching cowl. Worked in worsted weight yarn, this easy cowl knits up super fast! For the redux, I selected Cloudborn Superwash Merino Twist for its softness, color fastness and easy care. Cloudborn is still available (though it is discontinued) in some amazing colors from yarn.com and lovecrafts.com. It takes exactly two skeins, which amounts to about 400-420 yards. Imagine Colony in Plum Heather, Magenta or Lagoon! At $7.99 per skein, it makes an economical gift!⁠
