Knitting…with Cake!!

New Orleans knits! I had the opportunity on Wednesday to skip over to the Marigny for knit night at my former LYS, Bette Bornside Co. in the Fabourg Marigny. Miss Bette has one of the friendliest knitting groups ever. They were so warm and welcoming…I felt right at home immediately. The conversation was lively and intelligent AND we taste-tested two types of King Cake side by side! Knitting and cake…it’s a natural! (I suppose it didn’t hurt that we kicked the whole thing off with shots of King Cake Vodka 😉

It seems almost everyone was working on socks, including me, but I was also sandwiched between two really pretty sweaters, Jean to my left and Diane to my right. Lovely work!

Some of this marvelous Fibre Seed yarn will be coming home to PEC with me, I promise you. This ethically sourced American made yarn is softly scrumptious and the colors knocked my socks off! Miss Betty tells me she’s expecting a new delivery soon; I’m sure there will be something in there for me 🙂 I’m looking at the Sprout sock weight, although I may have to procure some of their mini’s (sweetly named “Seedlings”) for a mini-skein swap party I’m planning for the Church. (More details on that once I’m home.)

Apart from knitting (and eating and drinking all the yummy things), we’ve been working very hard on getting ready for the big party that continually plays out all over town. I’ve done some tailoring, making this fabulous velvet/lame coat for Miss Laura (she just needed a little something to wear to the parades in case it’s chilly ;). I loved making this long, gothic-inspired coat and I can’t wait to see it with it’s matching over-sized top hat completely encrusted in satin roses. Oh yeah.

My cloak for the big day is done thanks to Laura, but I still have my harlequin corset and headpiece to make. Right now, I’m playing beat the clock trying to finish my sugar skull masks for the New Orleans Mask Market that takes place next weekend in Dutch Alley. It is really a spectacular market showcasing masks and costumes from all over. If you’re local, come on down and say hey! See you there!
