I absolutely LOVE knitting socks! The combinations – color, pattern, style, heel and toe shaping – are virtually endless. When the opportunity came about to submit designs for Knit Picks latest sock missive, Splendid Soles, I was instantly on board. In my excitement, I think I worked up about 6 designs! Ultimately, Knit Picks design review team settled on the Fontana Socks, an over-the-knee combination of cables and ribbing.
Long and ribbed and highlighted with a delightful cable, these over-the-knee socks make a perfect showcase for a solid, kettle-dyed tonal or a subtle gradient. A cascading cable flows over long stretches of sinuous ribbing, incorporating extra ribs as the socks grow wider.
Though I had originally designed the Fontana Socks to showcase a gradient yarn that would gradually grow lighter as the socks got longer, I think they worked up beautifully in Knit Picks Stroll Tweed.
I’m a big fan of the entire Stroll line. It’s huge range of colors in a consistent, long-wearing and comfortable base is an undeniably good value. And recently, Knit Picks has expanded the Stroll line of products to include tonals, hand paints, gradients, tweeds and glimmer which sparkles with a touch of Stellina.
The Fontana Socks are worked from the toe up and could be worked singly or two-at-a-time. The fantastic Fleegle heel makes chromatic shifts organic and is fabulously simple to work. The Splendid Soles collection is available as a beautifully curated book or as individual patterns. Pretty nice to have on your shelf when the sock knitting bug bites!

Beautiful socks and pattern. There is just something about ribbed and cabled socks. They are so easy to knit and wear so well. The tweed yarn is stunning. I do not know the heel, it will be a new venture to me. 😉
