Good morning, knitters! I hope everyone’s weekend was wonderful and filled with lots of knitting. Since yesterday was a holiday, I’m taking some time today to introduce this week’s featured patterns. The focus is Fair Isle this week with these four easy Fair Isle accessories inspired by the frigid wintery waters of Lake Ontario. I hope you like them!
Sackets Harbor
The ever popular Sackets Harbor Mittens got a matching hat earlier this winter making for a classic Fair Isle set that is perfect for those new to stranded knitting.
During my summer sojourns, Sacket’s Harbor is the first signpost once I’ve left the interstate. It’s a quiet gem, the first leg of the Seaway Trail, and offers gorgeous, cool Lake Ontario vistas. It has a slightly retro vibe with roadside bars and cafes closed years ago by the building of I-81. I love it, and I often fantasize about how it must look in the off-season, foggy and damp with big fat snowflakes falling on icy waters.
The Sackets Harbor Hat, suitable for men and women, is a simple stranded knitting project, knit in the round, and perfect for the first-time fair isle knitter. Hat and mittens can be worked in any worsted weight yarn.
Hay Bay
Inspired by Lake Ontario from the Canadian side, the Hay Bay Hat and Hay Bay Mittens draw on the geometric patterning in Mohawk visual arts in and around the Tyendinaga region. Again, they’re a perfect first-time Fair Isle project.
Everyone needs a classic toque, especially one that’s knit in fresh, bright, snowy fair isle. This is a super simple stranded pattern, perfect for the first-time color work knitter. A deep, double fold ribbed brim provides extra warmth around the ears for those frosty days, while a roomy cap prevents hat head. A big fluffy pompom tops the whole thing off.
Beginning with classic Latvian braid and continuing with a simple two-color pattern, the Hay Bay Mittens are just challenging enough to keep you engaged. You’ll have a pair in no time working in cozy worsted weight yarn. The thumb is fully fashioned with a gusset and easy shaping makes a for nice rounded top. Choose two favorite colors and get going!
