Boysenberry, the Hat!

Good morning, knitters! I know that most of you are snowed in and frozen and I know that this is something of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means discomfort and inconvenience, but on the flip side, it can make for some very lovely and cozy knitting time. I’m praying up the latter for y’all!

Today, I have a very special release that has been in the works for a long time. Back in the fall of 2016, I dreamed up a pair of mittens with berry-like bobbles along the back of the hand. They were published in Love of Knitting Winter 2017 as the Jagody Mittens. Since then, I’ve re-released the pattern as the Boysenberry Mittens and have longed to create a hat to match. Now I have! Help me welcome the Boysenberry Hat.

The Boysenberry Hat: a sweet way to keep warm! Isn’t it great to see the return of bobbles to knitted work? They make such a clever and exuberant contribution to fabric texture and are great fun for the knitter. This bell-shaped hat with a tassel on top features a puffy berry motif on a background of directional stitches. An I-cord bind off from a provisional cast on creates a subtly shaped edge.

This release is doubly special to me because it is Miss Laura’s first foray into sample knitting. I so appreciate her dedicated approach, attention to detail and her deep desire to learn the craft. I think she’s made something really special!

I had originally intended to work up the Boysenberry Set in a smooth, worsted spun yarn. I think I spec’d Quince & Co Lark in the original design proposal and though I loved the way it behaved in the swatch, it seems I had something new to learn. LOK then Editor Debra Garish proposed Fibre Co’s Cumbria Fingering. Turns out, it was a very good call.

Apart from its obvious charms, color saturation, vague halo and softness, Cumbria possesses a truly charming rustic hairiness. A 2-ply, Cumbria creates homely irregular stitches that create little gaps where its mohair component is allowed to thrive. Cumbria is also available as a worsted weight. I love it.

To welcome this whimsical new hat pattern to my catalogue, I’d like to offer both the Boysenberry Hat and its matching Boysenberry Mittens at a 50% discount valid through Friday, February 8, 2019. I hope you’ll enjoy this amusing little set! Just pop in to my Ravelry shop, pick up the Boysenberry Hat and/or Mittens and enter the coupon code WINTERBERRIES at checkout. Sadly, the new Gardenia Stole and Interweave Knits Spring 2019 has still not gone live on Ravelry as promised. Look for that new design next week. Until then, happy knitting and stay warm!
