Boysenberry Mittens: a sweet way to keep hands warm! Isn’t it great to see the return of bobbles to knitted work? They make such a clever and exuberant contribution to fabric texture and are great fun for the knitter. A simply shaped mitten with a rounded top features a puffy berry motif on a background of directional stitches. An afterthought I-cord edge treatment supports a long-ish cuff and a fully fashioned thumb gusset.
These vibrant little mitts were first published in Love of Knitting, Winter 2017 (Jagody Mittens) which was my first exposure to Cumbria, a fabulous yarn in worsted and fingering weights from The Fibre Co. This mellow blend of merino, Masham wool and mohair is truly magical with its delicate halo, surprising tooth and durability. The shade card represents a rich, saturated and diverse palette.
I can’t say enough how much I love knitting bobbles. They are the ball fringe of the knitting world and can’t fail to make you smile. They impart such a sense of fun to knitted projects and can be made in so many different ways. Big ones, little ones, multiples, I love ’em all! Recently Miss Laura incorporated knitted bobbles into a felting project with very cool results. Just goes to show that bobbles are worth a little experimentation if you haven’t worked with them before.
