  • Can you work to a deadline?
  • Can you follow instructions?
  • Are you detail oriented?
  • Are you a good communicator?
  • Are you willing to rip back & re-knit?
  • Do you take great FO photos?

If so, you may enjoy Beta (or test) knitting! You’ll be an important part of the life of a new pattern.

Why Use Test Knitters?

Designers use Test Knitters for a number of reasons. Testers help to identify inaccuracies in patterns, smooth out confusing language and make patterns more user friendly. A pool of testers helps the designer accurately estimate yardage and ensures a nice variety of project photos on launch day. Testers, with the magic of social media, also help to create “buzz” about a pattern giving new designs a little extra momentum at launch.

Are special skills required?

If you love to knit and fit the criteria above, you’re qualified! In fact, most designers like to test patterns amongst knitters of all skill levels. An open mind and a willingness to learn are great skills to bring.

What are the rewards?

You’ll get first crack at a brand new pattern and the chance to be part of its development. You’ll be interacting closely with a designer and with other knitters that have a common goal. Often, there are yarn perks that can include deep discounts or free yarn and here at LCK, I offer a free pattern from my Ravelry Shop.

Here’s How it Works

  • Beta calls will be posted on the blog, on social media, in The Testing Pool on Ravelry, in my Ravelry group (The Designs of Cheryl Toy) and on Yarnpond.com and will include info like pattern details, the deadline, gauge, a yarn range, as well as the techniques that are used in the pattern.
  • I’ll be looking for 1 or 2 knitters per size for garments and multi-size accessories.
  • Once the beta call is full, I’ll need a couple of days to assemble a pool. Once the pool is chosen, the whole shebang will shift over to Yarnpond.com (for the foreseeable future at least) where we’ll be able to share the pattern, comments, edits and info.
  • Testers are encouraged to start a Ravelry project page for the pattern and to offer teasers through their social media accounts.
  • To add your name to the Beta email list, email me at cheryl@littlechurchknits.com. Include your email address and use the words BETA KNITS in the subject line.

…and that’s the long and short of it! More info comes to light once you’ve joined a pool.
