KnitScene Spring 2018

Another Cover!

What a great way to start the new year. It’s so strange…things get knitted, blocked and sent off into the ether then BAM! There they are on the cover! I’m so happy to be included in another KnitScene collection and particularly to be on the cover of the Spring 2018 issue. This particular sample was knitted by the talented Christine Ferguson. Thanks so much, Christine! (Check out the little inset photo…that’s me too! More on the second design in a later post.)

When KnitScene editor Hannah Baker reached out for 80’s and 90’s inspired knitwear, Heckerling began to take shape. In keeping with this time of paradox, I wanted to pair “Grunge” with “Clueless” to create a classic top-down pullover.

Here, the Grunge influence of omni-present waffle weave underwear collides with an ultra feminine cropped sweater. A wide, slightly square neckline and extra long sleeves set the look firmly in the early 90’s. I’ve modernized the look by adding 4” of positive ease so that Heckerling works as a versatile layering piece or a trendy stand-alone sweater. It’s an easy knit, top-down with raglan sleeves, with just enough patterning to engage the knitter. I thought it would be fun for beginners to knit; it makes a fine first sweater.

In addition to classic raglan shaping, new knitters are introduced to a good basic waffle stitch which forms the body of the sweater and to the nifty hemmed edge which frames the neckline, hem and cuffs. There’s a cute little knot stitch detail along the raglan line too, but mostly I’m fond of the easy shape.

Heckerling Pullover

One of the best things about working with magazines is the opportunity to experiment with interesting new yarns. Here, Harrisville Designs Silk & Wool is no exception. A 50/50 blend of wool and silk, this yarn has a very nubbly, slubby texture with next to no stretch. It creates a rustic, drapey fabric that softens beautifully with use and blocking. Its airy spin is perfect for cool, lightweight garments in casual shapes. And what a range of colors…

It looks like they had a great time styling and photographing this sweater too! Look at the modern take on classic Doc Marten boots!

KnitScene Spring 2018  will hit newsstands within the next couple of weeks, but is available for pre-order. If you’d prefer a digital download, you can get it HERE right now. Either way, I hope you enjoy it! Have a great day 🙂
