Jupiter Wrap Redux

Jupiter, the Redux

Hello, knitters! It’s been a little hectic here over the last few weeks! There’s been a ton of work going on including weeding out my storage unit and downsizing by at least half. There has also been a ton of fun and celebration. Laura’s birthday was this week and we had the pleasure of a visit from Miss Gwen who we’ve been missing since Christmas. I’ve been swatching like mad too. Lots of knitting is going on around here!

Here’s a little peek at my summer office window. Isn’t it sweet?

What I really want to do today is tell you about the redux version of my Jupiter Wrap which was originally published by Knit Now, a magazine in the UK. Now that the year of exclusivity has passed, I’m free to make a few changes, brush up the language and work it up in a fresh new colorway in lovely Cascade Anchor Bay. This sample was knitted by the grace and talent of my friend, Nina M. Many, many thanks Nina!

The Jupiter Wrap was inspired by mid-century ceramics which exude confidence, a simplicity of form and a uniquely stylized perspective of nature. Struck by repeated circular forms and perplexed with how they might be manifest in knitting, I’ve chosen a classic garter stitch rib to create strong vertical movement, and a fat Scandinavian-inspired cable to add a sense of buoyancy along the edge. These two aspects are laid on a bias-knit triangle to create an abstract, shape-shifting wrap, substantial like its ceramic forebears and sharing their color-block boldness and sense of scale.

In the new version, I wanted to introduce a third color to spark up Jupiter’s colorblock attitude. The narrow strip of bright orange red is an easy edging technique that I love for its simplicity. Stitches are picked up along the cabled edge, worked in stockinette for a couple of rows then bound off. This results in a smooth rolled edge that lends a little polish and color to the wrap.

Friend of Littlechurch KnitsSince it’s Friday, albeit a little later than usual, I’d like to welcome the new and improved Jupiter Wrap by offering it free until 6pm tomorrow, Saturday, August 18, 2018. Doesn’t that sound like a good idea? Just head over to my Ravelry shop, pop the Jupiter Wrap Redux into your shopping cart and enter the coupon code CERAMICS1 at checkout. Then cast on! (Feel free to share a link to this page with your friends, but please don’t give out the coupon code. It helps me a lot when folks come here to visit.) If you like these little discounts (I usually offer them on Friday mornings) and are interested in my work, I’d love to see you over at the new Ravelry group Friends of Littlechurch Knits. Until we meet again, happy knitting!
