Mardi Gras New Orleans

At the Mardi Gras!

Well, things are heating up here and there’s magic in the air! Though not much knitting has taken place over the last few days, I have certainly not lacked for a creative outlet. Miss Laura’s house was overrun all weekend with paint, glitter, gems, fabric and snippets of all things fancy. I’ve managed to paint 40 full face masks and I think I’ll stop now. I still need to add some flowers and gems, price them, and pack them up for the market which starts on Friday.

Sparkly Cloak FabricIn the meantime, there’s my costume to finish! Miss Laura cut and finished my cloak (Cloaks of Many Colors is our Krewe’s theme this year) since she is the resident expert at all things full-circle. The fabric is stunningly sparkly in the sun (let’s hope we have some sun this year!) and holds billions of teeny tiny sparkly bits. It shed so much that it has been banished to the patio or the kitchen.

Harlequin Corset

Last night I cut and sewed my corset. I have only to put some flowers on my top hat and decide on footwear. Footwear is important on Mardi Gras day. It can make the difference between fun and absolute misery. Comfort is key, but one still wants to add a little height to keep one’s costume out of the schlop that lays all over the streets.

So Thursday, we’ll be setting up our booth at the French Market in anticipation of great crowds all weekend. They’ve changed the hours of the Mask Market this year, closing at 4pm each day instead of 6 which is lovely for vendors. It cuts off 2 chilly boring hours at the end of the day and gives a girl time to get something to eat and still be on time for the parades 😉

Tomorrow night, I’ll be knitting at Miss Bette’s, Bornside Yarns from 4 – 6pm and after that, at Coop’s and Molly’s at the Market. Time for a little knitting in bars!
