I’m Slipping

White Slipcovers

I’m a big fan of slipcovers for about a million reasons. I love having a sofa I can throw in the wash. I like the softness of the way they look. I particularly like white slipcovers because they make a great neutral background for throw cushions that can be updated seasonally or on a whim. A hard-core commitment-phobic, I like being able to change my mind about big things…like sofas and refrigerators. And although I’m not planning to slip-cover my refrigerator any time soon, I am going to make slipcovers for our sofa as part of my Great Great Room Make-Over.

Delicious Room!

I’ve made many a slipcover in this life. Among my favorites are the ones I did in olive drab (?!?) way back in the ’90’s, but certainly not because of their color. Carl and I had just started dating and naturally, had our own apartments. I was in the middle of redecorating mine, a state in which I’ve found myself almost continually, before and since. We’re a lot alike, he and I and, as luck would have it, we had both purchased the exact same sofa, his in green, mine in white. As part of my (then) room make-over, I decided olive drab would be the perfect color with my new putty colored walls (once again ?!?). So, the fabric was purchased, a muslin block was made, yards and yards of piping were sewn, all ending in gut-wrenching regret. I hated them. I foisted them onto Carl where they found a home on his evil-twin sofa.

Apparently, our opinions diverged on a few matters (including those of taste) and we parted company soon after. I moved to New Orleans and we did not meet again until a few years ago. Long story short: I arrived at Carl’s after a 13 year absence and what do you think I found? Yup.

Chair Slipcover

It is those self-same, loathsome slipcovers that I will be disassembling and using for a pattern as soon as my new WHITE cotton canvas is delivered 😀

Part of me will be sad to see them go.
