lightweight knitted hat and cowl

The Hat & Cowl Set

What a great way to stay warm! A hat and cowl set keeps you toasty while stylishly pulling together your winter wardrobe. As a Canadian girl, I recognize the value of a good coat. Get the best you can afford in a calm neutral, then jazz it up with a hat and cowl set in a vibrant color. (Make a few to keep things interesting!) As a born-again Southerner, a hat and cowl might be all you need on a winter’s day. Combine a set with a plain sweater or long-sleeved tee and off you go! Through Friday, January 21, I’m offering 30% off four popular hat & cowl sets. Just head over to my Ravelry shop, pop in a set or two, and enter coupon code 4SETS at checkout. Here’s the lineup:

EARL GRAY

Earl Gray Hat & Cowl Set

Ah, winter: It’s the perfect time for weightless woolen spun accessories, warm as toast yet delicate and airy. The Earl Gray hat & cowl set honor winter with a rustic lacy motif over a hat & cowl of the simplest shape and construction.

Earl Gray Hat

This youthful toque and single loop cowl are made extra special by wavy, sea-inspired lines moving sinuously over the fabric’s surface. Easy to memorize and fun to knit, this set makes perfect car, movie or lecture knitting and is finished in no time. Woolen spun yarn like Brooklyn Tweed’s Loft give Earl Gray its supreme lightness and rustic texture.

COCKLESHELLS

Cockleshells Hat & Cowl Set

There’s nothing like being wreathed in a snuggly soft hat and cowl once snowy winter sets in! Cockleshells is a relaxed and slouchy hat that covers your ears and sits low on your brow. No hat head here! The matching cowl winds twice around your neck and shoulders, keeping you cozy all winter long.

Jumbo lace pattern

Even here in the South, Cockleshells is my go-to hat. It’s soft and fluffy and it keeps me warm even if I’m just wearing a T-shirt. The Cockleshells stitch pattern is fun to knit and interesting enough for seasoned knitters, yet this jumbo lace stitch pattern makes a great first lace project.

CHARLOTTE

Charlotte Hat & Cowl Set

A delicate combination of cables and eyelets wend their way gently across the surface of this softly unstructured set. Stockinette panels are punctuated with simple rhythmic cables and pierced with rick rack openwork columns. Whisper soft with a delicate halo, pure alpaca brings these pretty details to light while its two-ply character adds a rustic quality.

Charlotte Hat

The Charlotte hat is slouchy in shape and is topped with a fluffy fur pompom (yarn requirements allow for a matching yarn pompom if you prefer). The cowl is a generously sized double loop. Both pieces are worked seamlessly in the round from the bottom up.

ZEPHYR

There is something impossibly sweet about lacy knitted accessories. I’m always amazed by how warm they remain despite being created from groups of tiny holes. I love how the little eyelets fill up with halo!

This is a very simple lace pattern, intuitive and easy to memorize. It’s a traditional combination of knits and yarn overs that has been in use for many years. It has a sweetness about it that comes from its simplicity and its gentle meandering lines. The cowl is a simple once-around ring edged in ribbing. The hat is slouchy and round and trimmed with a pompom. I’ve used a pretty fur one, but there will be sufficient yardage to make a matching one from yarn if you prefer.

And there you have it, a nice slate of colorful bite-sized knitting to spice up a winter weekend! Enjoy!

I'd love to hear from you!
