6 Projects to Knit in Public

6 Projects to Knit In Public

Saturday is World Wide Knit In Public Day, so I thought I’d share these 6 projects to knit in public. These are easy, portable projects that use yarns you probably have in stash. It’s not much fun to be glued to a pattern or a chart when knitting in public, so all of these projects feature intuitive stitch patterns that are easy to knit and to memorize. Take a deep dive into your stash and read on to pick your project for Saturday!

#1 BARRETT

Socks make perfect carry-along knitting. I generally have two pair on my needles to keep second sock syndrome at bay!

Projects to Knit in Public

Just one step beyond plain vanilla, the Barrett Socks are essential, authentic and everyday wearable for men, women and teens. With a central panel of textured stitches running from top to toe, Barrett keeps things interesting while showcasing a hand-dyed, variegated or marled yarn. Sock solids also get a lift from this sassy combination of knits and purls. These well-fitting socks are worked from the top down beginning with the Twisted German cast on and feature a short row heel.

#2 BUMBLE

Need a little extra action in your easy peasy project? Then Bumble is for you. It’s got a nice chubby cable running straight up the back to keep you engaged.

Fingerless Mitts

What could be more fun than a cable with eyelets and bobbles? How ‘bout a cable that reminds you of a bumble bee in flight? Enter BUMBLE, the best fun you can have with under 60 g of worsted weight yarn. These engaging fingerless mitts work up in a trice and make a great stashbuster. BUMBLE features a fully fashioned thumb gusset, stockinette palm and ribbed edges. Make a pair on the weekend and add a second pair as a gift!

#3 BARN SWALLOW

Here’s a mesmerizing little knit! That gentle panel is so easy to memorize, it makes the perfect project to knit in public. Psssst…! It’s this week’s FREE BONUS pattern 😉

Knitted Fingerless Mitts

How about a touch of ‘really pretty’ peeking out from your coat sleeve? BARN SWALLOW feminine fingerless mitts are just the thing! They’re quick to knit with just enough excitement to keep a knitter from getting bored, yet much easier than they look. They’re a great stashbuster and they make great gifts, too! You’ll want to make them in every color. Bonus? They match the Barn Swallow Socks 😉

#4 FUSED

Who couldn’t use another tote for the farmer’s market or the beach? And really, Fused can be worked in any kind of cotton or cotton blend yarn.

Plant Based Market Tote

Off to the pool or the farmer’s market? Take along a plant based tote! Horizontal open work lends a “deconstructed” air to this functional market bag that combines a boho vibe with city chic. It’s big enough to hold all your essentials but works up in heartbeat using DK weight yarn. The Fused Market Tote has a fun-to-knit construction that begins at the bottom with a bellybutton cast on, then works its way outward to form a circle. It is worked entirely in the round and finishes with an I-cord upper edge. This little bag is such fun! Make Fused in a ton of colors, then give as gifts!

#5 COLONY

Projects to knit in public need to be rhythmic and intuitive. That describes Colony to a tee! Works up quick in just about any DK weight yarn.

Projects to Knit in Public

The Colony Cowl is a real go-to! The stitch pattern is super simple yet fun to knit and produces an attractive, open fabric. “All the warmth without the weight” describes Colony perfectly. It is long enough to loop once loosely around the neck or twice snugly for those unexpectedly cool days. Worked in worsted weight yarn, Colony knits up quick as a wink and makes a great gift. Knit one in every color and toss them in your ‘holiday basket’ to give as gifts!

#6 CUMULUS

A list of projects to knit in public would not be complete without a shawl pattern! This one is small, nimble and quick.

Cumulus Wrap

Bands of puffy Garter Stitch flanked by smooth valleys of Stockinette Stitch energize the Cumulus Shawl using only the most basic stitches. An easy-to-memorize edging uses directional decreases to coax the Garter stripes into cloudy rippled waves. This is a fun and easy knit that strikes the perfect balance of car or TV knitting, with an engaging edge treatment. The Cumulus Shawl is a shallow, semi-circular wrap worked from the top down.

Have a great time knitting with your besties on Saturday!

I'd love to hear from you!
