Hello, knitters! It’s been a minute since we spoke. It has been such an incredibly busy time. So much has happened. Mardi Gras, my birthday, spring walks on the bayou, knitting deadlines and on and on!
Knitting!
My knitting world has been all about the deadlines recently, though I’ve offset the pain by doing most of my knitting on the patio. A lot is being published. Coming up, you’ll see a sparkly pullover, a fluffy hat and a big, beautiful, boxy pullover worked in Cascade Yarns Llamerino. I really loved working with Llamerino, soft and silky with a lovely halo. I especially love this color, Chili Pepper!
My Little Garden
As many of you know, I’m a new gardener. In the past I’d believed that I have a brown thumb, but recently I’ve begun cultivating succulents. They are so forgiving and independent that even I can’t kill them. They take on personalities for me and I love each one individually. Just now, I’m experimenting with propagation. So far, so good! These are ghost plant leaves; they’re callousing over so that they can be laid on top of the soil to sprout and grow a baby plant. We’ll see how we go!
The Garden Out There
I am so in love with life in the Deep South. The seasons are very subtle, but they are there. Spring comes early and fall lasts a long time. I could fill volumes with photos of the flowering plants that I see on my morning walks. Right now, the azaleas are full on and the amaryllis, shockingly gorgeous, are just starting to make a show of it.
The Beautiful Bayou
We live just a few blocks from the Bayou St. John, so it figures prominently in my morning walks. The Bayou is such a wonderful natural resource, reflective, meditative and calm. I’ve read that there are alligators in there from time to time and even eel! Nonetheless, the Bayou Boogaloo (a music festival) is held on its banks and in its waters every spring. It’s hard to believe that this is right in the middle of town!
The neighborhoods that border the Bayou are so unusual, like something out of Faulkner or Tennessee Williams. I walk these neighborhoods almost every day and they never look the same twice!
Occasionally, I’ll pop in for Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary which is a super elaborate Catholic church on the Bayou. I found this little Madonna tucked into a wall on the back side of the the church.
Isn’t she sweet? Look how tenderly she holds the infant’s feet.
Well, that’s all I have to report this week. I hope you’re happy, healthy and knitting like the wind!
Love,
Cheryl
