Life and the WIPs

Good morning! It’s just a glorious day here in Dixieland, rather handy for all our visitors who are here for our world famous Jazz & Heritage Festival. I was out at the festival on Saturday and very lucky to have seen the magnificent Bonnie Raitt (Ok, what is she eating? Hasn’t aged a tick in the over 30 years I’ve been following her!), Jack Johnson, and Rod Stewart among many others. Miss Laura and our party had an absolute blast and encountered many, many Canadians during our day in the sun. See the little Canadian flag pin on my hat? It got me stopped every 15 minutes to rejoice with my countrymen from all across Canada!

Our little patio garden is thriving on the sunny moistness and warmth of spring. Thanks to Miss Laura’s green thumb, we have zinnias, lantana, bougainvillea, jasmine, geraniums, morning glory, gardenias (trying to bloom), mandevillia, a bunch of bromeliads, and of course, the pink lemon tree!

It actually has a teeny weeny lemon on it!

We are told that when it bears fruit that’s large enough to pick, the lemons will be pink inside! I wonder if that’s where pink lemonade comes from?

Just so you don’t think I’m just partyin’ it up all the time, following is proof of actual knitting! This past week was spent primarily in swatching for a cable collection (more on that later if one of my designs is selected). The world of cables just boggles the mind. Cables are a true testimony to the inventive excellence of the knitter’s brain. Honestly, one could begin designing with cables today, continue for 100 years and still not exhaust the many combinations and permutations.

It was a truly wonderful week in the world of acquisitions, even if some are only mine temporarily. It’s nice to spend time yarn fondling.

Jaggerspun Zephyr

Jaggerspun is my new favorite yarn having been turned on to it by Meghan Babin, editor of Interweave Knits, for whom I designed a pretty cool new sweater for release in the Winter 2019 issue. This incarnation is Jaggerspun Zephyr, an impossibly light blend of wool and silk. This pretty stuff will be reincarnated into a silky, drapey, light-as-air stole.

The nice folks at Madeline Tosh sent me these lovely skeins for my new Charlotte Shawl, a great big triangle with a few interesting surprises. The blue is Well Water and the off white is Antler. I can’t wait to get my hands in it. Right now, it’s sitting there waiting and winking at me until I can clear my slate a little. In the words of my late great friend Wendell Reed Walker, “Pretty as a pile of speckled pups!”.

Madeline Tosh Twist Light

I’ve made a little progress on my Jardin Mitts. These will be embroidered and released later this month. I’m so excited to start the embroidery. I’ve got a big project on my plate that I’m trying to finish up, but because these little mitts are so portable, I’m allowing myself to work on them at Miss Bette’s knit night and at Tipsy Knitters.

Speaking of the Tipsy Knitters, we’re meeting tonight at Pearl Wine Bar in Mid-City if you’re interested. Remember, you don’t have to be local to be a member. Join the Facebook group and follow along with the fun! Then, maybe you’ll come to New Orleans on vacation and have a knit and a sip with us.

That’s all the news that’s fit to print! Til we meet again, happy knitting!
