Cool New Stuff!

The first few weeks of fall are such a whirlwind after the lazy days of summer. I always enjoy these weeks…I think it’s a throw-back to my childhood back-to-school experiences which were always very positive. This year, in particular, I’ve got some really cool new stuff planned…like some brand new classes and some new twists to old favorites.

For a long time, I’ve been fantasizing about working out a full-day Strand & Steek course, and now I have! In the morning we’ll work the “strand” component, carrying yarn in both hands. We’ll be covering Continental knitting and color dominance techniques to ensure successful colorwork. In the afternoon, we’ll tackle steeking. Since Strand & Steek is project driven–we’ll be making a set of 4 Fair-Isle coasters–participants have 4 chances at cutting beautiful steeks. I think this will be a fun, colorful way to learn some time-honored techniques.

This course will be available in two eastern Ontario locations. If you’re in the Ottawa area, Strand & Steek will be offered at one of my all-time favorite yarn shops, Wool-Tyme, on Saturday, October 21. Register in-store at 190 Colonnade Rd S, Unit 2 or by telephone at 613-225-9665.

On Saturday, October 14 as part of an exciting full weekend of workshops, I’ll be at the brand new and fabulous Grey Heron Yarns in Belleville. Register in the shop at 25 Pinnacle Street South or by telephone at 613-771-9222.

Along with Strand & Steek, here are some of the other cool stuff we’ll have going at Grey Heron on the weekend of October 13, 14 & 15:

Skills Building

We’ll start on Friday afternoon with a Skills Building workshop. We’ll tackle Magic Loop, a tubular cast-on, Judy’s Magic Cast-On and much, much more! If you’ve registered for this class and have a particular technique you’d like to learn, shoot me an email at cheryl@littlechurchknits.com. Perhaps we can accommodate you!

Knit-To-Fit

On Sunday morning, we’ll be helping to knitters to create sweaters that really fit and flatter. Knit-To-Fit is the perfect way to get the best results possible. We’ll learn to interpret a pattern and to use schematics to make a sweater with the perfect fit. We’ll learn to make intelligent yarn substitutions and pattern modifications and to knit a gauge swatch that ensures success.

Knit Mosaic

And on Sunday afternoon, it’s Knit Mosaic. Learn to work complex colorwork patterns without stranding! There’s nothing to carry, no floats and no bobbins. This easy colorwork method uses only one yarn at a time, yet produces rich colorful designs. Because it can be worked flat, mosaic makes a great partner for intarsia motifs. We’ll working mosaic in the round to create the Tess Headband, the perfect quick project that keeps your ears warm as toast.

Tipsy Knitters!

And how about this, for fancy new stuff!

The brand new Tipsy Knitters of New Orleans will be meeting each Wednesday evening, 7-ish at Pearl Wine Bar in Mid-City at the American Can Company. Our first official evening of Tipsy Knitting will take place on Wednesday, September 27. If you’re local or near by to New Orleans, you can hit us up on Ravelry here.

We are a group of friendly New Orleans knitters who knit together at a fancy little wine bar every Wednesday evening. We enjoy a little sip while we knit and because we also like a good pun,we think that the Pearl Wine Bar located in Mid-City at the American Can Company is the perfect place to do it! We welcome knitters of all stripes and we’re happy to include folks who crochet, tat, etc. We meet about 7 and go til whenever. Delicious cheese and charcuterie plates are available at very reasonable prices, and Wednesday is $5-glass night. There’s lots of free parking. Hope to see you soon for a Tipsy Knit!
