It’s the time of year when we start practicing how we will “embrace” the cold. We pull out our prettiest sweaters, launder them, love them, and think, romantically, about how much we’re going to enjoy wearing them through the coziness of the winter. As a Canadian, it’s hard to imagine any good sweater collection that lacks a traditional Cowichan, sometimes called a Siwash or a Salish sweater, all named for native peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Worked in the limited palette natural to sheep’s fleece, these marvelous sweaters are still hand-knit by native Canadian knitters to this day.
